A coalition of Civil Society and pro democracy group under the aegis of Concerned Nigerians have staged a peaceful protest march in Abuja asking ailing Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to resume or resign his office after he has spent 92 days in London for medical treatment without a definite date for return to work.
Concerned Nigerians on Monday, August converged at the Unity Fountain in Abuja urging the president to either resume duty or resign.
The protest was led by flamboyant musician, Charles Oputa aka Charly Boy and the convener Deji Adeyanju. Adeyanju noted that it regretted the failure of the leadership of the National Assembly to launch an investigation or set up a panel to look into the true status of the President Buhari’s health, adding the group believes the legislators have been compromised and are working with an infamous cabal in the executive branch against the Nigerian people.
The group’s leader Deji Adeyanju said members of the Concerned Nigerians will march to the Presidential Villa to demand the resignation of the President.
Adeyanju also said the protest will continue tomorrow with a sit-out at the Unity Fountain until the president either returns or resigns. The group is demanding for the return of the president back to Nigeria, or for his resignation due to the fact that he is ill.
He added that the sit-out will continue daily from 9 am to 10 am. “The president cannot continue to remain in London infinitum. Osinbajo cannot continue to function as an Acting President Infinitum. They are holding the country to ransom. It is not by force to remain a president. It is also time for Section 144 is activated. Also speaking at the protest, the leader of the group and renowned singer Charles ‘Charly Boy’ Oputa said: “Our Mumu Don Do.” Charly Boy added that he was at the protest to demand the resumption or resignation of the President. Members of the Concerned Nigerians are also expected to march to the Presidential Villa and demand for the resignation of President Buhari He said he was also present to support the youths who have been saddled with the responsibility of demanding accountability and transparency from Nigerian leaders.
The placard carrying protesters converged at the Unity Fountain near Transcorp Hilton with the following inscriptions; “Resume or Resign Nigerians say enough is enough”; “Buhari ! Where are you?” “We Are Tired of Being Enslaved in Our Country,” “Our Mumu Don Do”; “Buhari Called For Impeachment When Yar’adua Was Sick, Now We Are Calling For Same.”
Also present at venue include officers of the Nigeria Police Force, various police vans and horses. CitizenNG had reported that a sit-out protests which would hold simultaneously in London and Abuja have been announced by a coalition of concerned Nigerians.
